CENTAURA - LAWDY, LAWDY, LAWD

Warrior horse-woman of myth or chimerical beast of late 1970s funk? It is simply Centaura, available here for what amounts to the first time. For Atlanta hillbilly impresario Bob Riley, the "Spiral Series" of 12"s was part put-on, part hustle-but for Birmingham, Alabamas Centaura, that spiral-in logo appeared as a long-shot leg up. Their record's two-color, one-idea cover was mass-produced for Rileys envisioned run of potential releases. though nothing but the enigmatic Centaura ever filled the jacket-and just barely. Recorded in 1978, Lawdy, Lawdy, Lawd is a long-playing Golden Fleece of funk, disco, boogie, and deep post-Muscle Shoals balladry that wouldve surely failed to exist without Riley's extreme penny-pinching tactics in service of a failed marketing ploy so ludicrous, it kept the LP out of stores, relegated to extreme scarcity forever. On Side One, Jesse Daniel and Cedrich Rutledge trade energized beats and freaks, before the synth-washed slowdown of "One of a Kind." Side Two features Rileys two textbook funk cuts and album-ender "Just Dont Love You" - a mysterious tack-on of the Carbon Copies Git Down Inc.-issued 45, plus a heaving "Distant Lover" that sexes Marvin Gayes original into softcore porn territory.

FINIS AFRICAE - EL SECRETO DE LAS 12

'The Secret Of 12 O'Clock' is the second EM Records release by Spaniard Juan Alberto Arteche Guel's Finis Africae project. This release collects six pieces from three 1980s albums, pieces not released on 'A Last Discovery"' This latest collection captures Finis Africae in a more spiritual mode, organic and flowing, with some prominent drone textures, featuring a wide range of instruments including flutes, hand percussion, guitar, sax, keyboards and synths, combined with field recordings in a music which could be heard as a less-chilly and more organic parallel Fifth World to Jon Hassell's Fourth. The title track 'El Secreto De Las 12' is a Balearic chill-out classic, a firm favorite of Cafe Del Mar DJ Jose Padilla, who spun the track during his sunset sets on Ibiza. This track has circulated on cassettes for years, but now is available again on vinyl and CD. 'El Secreto' and the accompanying tracks are back, sure to appeal not only to chill-outers and nostalgic DJs, but also to the listeners of Balearic/techno/house DJs, deep organic-funk, experimental music, field recordings, African and world music. Secret no longer.

FOUR MINTS - GENTLY DOWN YOUR STREAM

Gently Down Your Stream marked a creative zenith within the Columbus, Ohio, soul scene, at the juncture of the 1960s and 70s. The Four Mints were one of the most influential local group harmony outfits of their era and-with assistance from Columbus doyen and Capsoul purveyor Bill Moss-among the few to release a full length LP. The roster of backing musicians hired to provide aural landscaping reads like a Midwest supergroup, with surprising appearances from Indianapolis-based vibraphonist Billy Wooten and drummer Bobby Allen of the Fabulous Originals from Dayton, Ohio. And though most of the material on 1973s Gently had been previously released as 45s, the collection-five singles and one priceless track saved from the scrap heap-gives witness to a world-class vocal quartet at its professional and intuitive peak. Tracklist: 1. You're My Desire (3:11) 2. Row My Boat (4:04) 3. Why Did I Go (3:17) 4. Do You Really Love Me (4:28) 5. Too Far Gone (2:06) 6. You'll Want To Come Back (2:30) 7. ROKK - I WANT TO LIVE HIGH

A debut album that never was, Rokk's I Want To Live High is that rare misshapen pearl clenched tightly between the shells of a music industry shucked long ago. Too soulful for its disco-era release date, the sextet's 1976 Tollie-issued 45 "Patience" (as featured in Eccentric Soul: Omnibus) tracked well in Rokk's hometown of Los Angeles, but was withdrawn before patience ran out with the spring rains of 1977. Tracked simultaneously was this entire shelved album full of Rokk's mid-tempo grooves, flute-lead funk, sultry female backing vocals, slap bass, chorus-drenched guitars, and lyrics about getting baked and eating baked apple pie. Jazzy, with plentiful slices of Broadway, Innervisions, and Rokk's own stoned brand of horn-rock, had I Want To Live High ever gotten so high as actual record store shelves circa late 1977, it wouldve surely sobered up to the commercial onslaught of saturday night disco juggernauts and the pummeling forces of earth, wind, and fire. Track Listing Side A 1. Patience 2. Youve Been Gone too Lon g 3. I Want To Live High 4. It Better Git Better Side B 1. Dont Be No F ool 2. From Within 3. Baby Please

VARIOUS - ECCENTRIC SOUL: THE BANDIT LABEL (3LP)
A story that could almost be fiction. The house passing as a home, the harem passing as a family, the rising star brutally murdered in his prime, the dream, the con: The end. Arrow Brown inhabited the same southside Chicago landscape as Afro-Noir author Iceberg Slims ghetto characters, taking inspiration from the same dark sources that shaded Airtight Willie, White Folks, and Blue Howard. Drawn to the underground and fancying himself a rogue entrepreneur, Brown and his Bandit label lived somewhere between money laundering outfit and sex cult. He poured proceeds from his many "daughters" straight jobs into making records by the Arrows, the Majestic Arrows, Johnny Davis, Linda Balentine, Hassan, Chosen Few, Sandy Cleveland, and even his seven-year-old son Altyrone Deno Brown. Putting beauty and genius in front of commercial viability, Arrow laid down lush, sweeping strings to lure the listener into a hipster fantasy world, sharply incongruent with the sometimes-criminal reality of the city that dreamt it. This triple LP reissue features every known song ever recorded by Brown, and includes a 14,000 word paperback novella detailing the twisted and beautiful fantasy world he created around himself. Track Listing: Side A 1. The Arrows - We Have Love 2. The Arrows - The Love I See Now 3. The Arrows - Boogedy Boogedy 4. The Arrows - Bring Back The One I Love 5. VARIOUS - ECCENTRIC SOUL: THE FORTE LABEL (2LP)
In 1969, after three years as Soul Sister #1 to James Brown's touring entourage, Marva Whitney came home to Kansas City, putting Ellis Taylor's Forte label back at full fighting strength. Shed calmed aching crowds the day after MLK's death, and shed lived the life, despite its rigors-to pour out her pain and exuberance on Forte sides including "Ive Lived The Life" and "Daddy Dont Know About Sugar Bear," which made national rounds in 1972. By then, Forte had already done more than deliver Marvelous Marva to market. Taylor worked overtime at KPRS to bring the world The Rayons, whod stroll their girl group harmonies past Chicagos RCA studios on "Baby Be Good." In 68, The Four Darlings sauntered in with smoky-voiced soul operatics on the demanding "Give Me Love." Progressing in the middle 70s, Everyday People got "Super Black" on Forte's pine-green label. Still powering forward some 13 years on, Forte redawned with the 1980s, essaying disco funk with Sharon Revoal's "Reaching for Our Star." Numero 047 Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label charts Kansas City yeomans work, the Carpets and the Derbys, dapper clothiers mysteriously murdered, and marriages made and broken. In 28 LP tracks, plus a trove of promo headshots and every-hued label scans detailing all iterations of Fortes logo in print, this 16th Eccentric Soul sojourn hands over vivid floor shakers and lost dance craze records alike-though what moves "The Hen" required remains anyone's guess. VARIOUS - KING BULLARD VERSION: SONGS OF THE BOS LABEL

On Clevelands late 60's gospel scene, the BOS label was the refined, professional ying to Boddie's lo-fi yang, galloping to the fore bearing a torch for Curtis Mayfield's robe-wearing roots. Founded by gospel impresario James Bullard, BOS is the first chapter in story that includes stints producing major spiritual albums for the Birthright, Roadshow, and Word labels. BOS got its start inside Lester Johnson and Bill Branchs Way Out concern, running the devotional wing of Clevelands largest black-owned record company, and picking up a ton of Way Outs soulful flavor in the process. Compiled here are BOS's less traditional moments - 12 bridges between FM R&B and AM sermons from a time when those worlds were splitting apart. Track Listing Side A 1. Sensational Saints - The War Is Over 2. Trumplettes - My Life Will Be Sweeter 3. Mighty Imperials - Unity 4. Trumpelettes - Ive Been To The Top Of The Mountain 5. Mighty Imperials - We Need Him Now 6. Sensational Saint - Walk Through The Valley Side B 1. BOS Singers - Move Satan 2. Capitalaires - Glory, Glory 3. Southern Echoes - Why Am I Treated So Bad 4.
